Beijing Ducks Confirms Abueva’s Deal
Beijing Ducks Chief of Basketball Operations and Head Coach Yannis
Christopoulos on Tuesday confirmed that PBA player Calvin Abueva has accepted
the offer to play for the team in one year.
On Monday, news about the Phoenix Fuel Masters point guard
being offered to play the Chinese Basketball League (CBA) circulated online.
Although there is no official statement from the point guard, major online
outlets especially the Wikipedia has its page updated including Abueva’s name
in Beijing Ducks’ roster.

Abueva is currently on indefinite suspension after
intentionally hitting TNT KaTropa forward and former NBA player Terrence Jones.
A veteran PBA player,
Abueva is star point guard selected second overall by the Alaska Aces on 2012 PBA
draft.
According to Christopoulos, with or without suspension, his
team has been offering Abueva to play in CBA since 2014.
“If he accepted our first offer in 2015, he could have
played together with Stephon (Marbury) who brought us three championship
titles), Christopoulos said.
There is no official statement of reaction from the PBA yet
but since Abueva is under indefinite suspension without pay, his move to accept
the once in a lifetime offer seems reasonable.
Abueva and his lawyer/manager is currently in China and is
expected to give official stamen by the end of the week.
It is not clear when the star will start to play but considering that
CBA is in offseason, it is highly likely that Abueva will star to Play on
October when the CBA season opens.
Abueva will be the first-ever Filipino player to play for a professional
Chinese basketball team.
CBA is the second biggest basketball league in the world
after the NBA and is the best destination for NBA players who could not get
contract in any NBA team during the free agency.
