Pacquiao Proposes Bill Extending Duterte’s Term to 4 Years

Senator Manuel “Manny” pacquiao on Friday submitted a bill that would extend President Rodrigo Duterte’s term to 4 years more after his original term ends on 2022.

In the current law, the president is allowed only to run for one 6-year term and is not allowed for re-election.

The bill would not allow Mr. Duterte to run for re-election as the Philippine constitution will not be modified. The bill will also give Duterte an extra 4 years without changing the Constitution.

Pacquiao said he decided to draft a bill after Duterte’s actions on overseas cases involving OFWs, especially in Kuwait.

Pacquiao said this as Duterte issued a strongly worded statement against Kuwait over the death of Filipina domestic helper Joanna Demafelis.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao also called on the Kuwaiti government to hold the people behind Demafelis’ death accountable.

Duterte enjoys strong support from overseas Filipinos, winning in the overseas absentee voting in the 2016 polls.
