Zarate Proposes Bill to Totally Ban Cockfighting after Losing ₱850K on Derby
Bayan Muna representative and activist leader Carlos Isagani Zarate is taking cockfighting personal after he reportedly lost almost a million pesos in a span of two-week gambling before the 2018 World Slasher Cup.
The leftist congressman on Friday said he will craft a bill totally banning cockfighting in the Philippines because “it bankrupted many people and destroyed families”.
From January 7 to 21, rumors about Zarate’s loses started to come-out after his long time handler resigned.
Zarate is known to the cockfighting enthusiasts and always seen on bigger events.
The unnamed handler was reportedly very upset because he prepared 7 cocks for the 2018 World Slasher Cup, but the congressman joined the Quezon City 3-cock derby on January 13 and 14, losing all but one cocks in the process plus ₱850,000.
Another long time employee also left his farm said that he put all his money because it was Team Pacman (Manny Pacquiao) on the other side and he wanted to beat him. Pacquiao is known to own big cockfighting farms and is a big name in the business.
The Philippines is like a Mecca of cockfighting and banning the sport will upset many prominent individuals including big politicians.
The 2018 World Slasher Cup is currently held at Smart Araneta Coliseum (February 2 to 4) and Zarate was not expected to join after losing his entry and money two weeks before the world event.
It is not clear if he will really pursue the bill but knowing that he lost large amount of money and no chance to recover it again from the same sport, he may say goodbye to cockfighting.
