BIR/NBI to go after Pro-LP Fake News Site Illegaly Asking Donations Online

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) are taking a closer look at the website owned by  the staff working at Liberal Party (LP) headquarters in Quezon City over its illegal solicitations online.

On Friday, NBI spokesman Atty. Ismael Cedera told the public through DZYL that people, especially netizens should avoid giving any donation money to the website Memebuster.net because its operation is illegal.

Memebuster.net is owned by certain Romil Montecalvo – an employee of Liberal Party.
“Memebuster.net claims to be fighting fake news but iun reality, it is making profit when their is a fake news that is going viral by debunking it. If the site really fighting fake news, the owner should report offending sites to our cyber-crime division. So far, our office did never receive a single report from Memebuster while it continue to collect money illegally online”, Cedera said.

The BIR on the other hand sait it would investigate the website’s illegal collection online.
BIR spokesperson Atty. Claudia Zobel also told netizens to stay away from the website.

Another site Okd2.com which listed on the Memebuster.net list as fake news website responded with a more detailed explanation how memebuster is making money through fake news. The detailed explanation can be found here.

Memebuster relies only its content on fake news and publish anti-government and anti-Duterte articles.

As of press time, data on Memebuster.net’s website says it already collected ₱52,252 from 28 donors.
