South Korea in Need of 8,600 English Teachers from the Philippines

Many South Koreans are hesitant to go to Philippines after learning from the Korean drama “Three Days” that kidnapping in Philippines is rampant and the victim is difficult to save. Although the scene on the drama is not true, many Filipinos believe that this drama should be banned from future airing and demands the apology from the Korean Film Director who created the fuss.

Because of this, the South Korean government has decided to hire at least 8,500 Filipino English teachers.

The job opening is open only to teachers who hold PRC license. English major is not required as majority of Korean students only requires Basic English language.

Although this is good news for teachers that holds PRC license, the Department of Education reacts differently. DepEd spokesman Dr. Bernadel Fuentes told the press that this job offer can create big problem to the agency when public school teachers leave their school and go to Korea for better salary.

“Licensed Teachers in Philippines who are jobless are hard to find as most board passers are hired by DepEd within two years after passing the LET. Where are they going to get qualified teachers if not from Public Schools”, Fuentes addressed the media during the press conference on Monday

“It may offer a great financial upgrade but teachers should consider the long-term effect and their professional career once their 3 to 6 years contract is over”, Fuentes added.

Malacañang on the other hand is happy after hearing the news but did not give further comment when asked what to do with DepEd if teachers leaves the schools.
