Aquino IV said the President’s decision to abolish the NFA Council -which serves as the policy-making body of the NFA – has only removed the corruption safeguards in the agency.

“The government has removed safeguards to corruption and abuse in the NFA. Without the NFA Council, the orchestrators of this rice crisis will continue to make questionable decisions with impunity,” Aquino said in a statement.

“The main problem why NFA is experiencing shortage is that, they are selling NFA rice to rich people wherein it shouldn’t be. NFA rice should be given only to minimum wage earners”, Aquino said.

“Kaya hindi nagiging balance ang stock natin dahil pati yong mga minimum wage earners ay ayaw kumain ng NFA rice samantalang itong bigas ay para talaga sa kanila. Yon naming ibang mayayaman, sobrang kuripot, NFA binibili. We should have a clear line here. NFA rice should only be given doon sa mga kumikita ng mababa at kahit may pambili pa sila, dapat i-limit natin sila sa NFA rice lamang para ma-monitor natin ng ayos ang stocks ng NFA”, Aquino said shocks journalists.

Duterte has ordered the abolition of the NFA council to fast-track the agency’s importation of rice.

The verbal order was made by the President during a meeting with industry stakeholders on Thursday, which Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco said was meant to seek the help of traders and retailers in maintaining the country’s rice supply.
