Toddler Dies after Ingesting Unbranded Papaya Soap from Divisoria

A 2-year old child from Malabon died 4 hours after ingesting a considerable amount of papaya bath soap.
On Wednesday, Lauren Butial bought four pieces of the unbranded soap from Divisoria and mistakenly put it inside the refrigerator together with other foods she bought the same day.

Hours later, her older daughter called her at work and said her sister won’t stop crying.

Butial brought her daughter to hospital and doctors at Pagamutang Bayan ng Malabon said he suffered severe stomach pain. The baby eventually dies after 4 hours.

Her husband, who just arrived from fishing, said he found half of the papaya soap under the table and it appeared to be eaten.

Experts said the soap contains high quantity of Formaldehyde, a highly toxic chemical compound found on several products from China.

The baby’s body is subject to an autopsy but endoscopic results earlier suggest that the baby’s stomach and intestine suffered from chemical burns.

Authorities said the scent of the soap possibly attracted the baby’s attention and ate it.
The Department of Health is now investigating the source of the soap and additional samples are being examined.
