Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) Secretary General Renato Reyes Jr., left the crowd earlier to check his bank whether the money has been deposited properly, a fellow activist who was unsatisfied on how Reyes managed the group told Inquirer during the second State of the Nation Address of President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday.

On Tuesday, the head office of Liberal Party has reportedly released at least P8 million to finance the anti-Sona rally, and Reyes was said to be the chief protest organizer.

The militant leader reportedly visited LP’s headquarters at Quezon City the day it released the budget.

Ruben (not his real name), said that Reyes was supposed to wait until the protest is finished, but because of heavy rain, the activist leader decided to go to BPI-Binondo branch to check if money has been deposited to his account.

Ruben wasn’t sure how much Reyes was paid but hinted that the militant leader could have earned at least P800,000 for the rally.

The source, who has been working with Reyes in the past five years, said that the activist leader has a list of dates where leftist groups can stage a protest. Ruben cited ASEAN summit, Labor Day, SONA, visits of important foreign diplomats, Marcos’ burial at LNMB, and some important anniversaries that the government declared a holiday.

“He told me several days ago that he wanted to have a 1 week Boracay vacation after this major event when the island reopens. I think he achieved what he wants now. He made enough budget”, Ruben said.

Ruben admitted he also made money but said he received just a fraction of what leaders like Reyes are making.

“I receive what many are receiving. Just to feed my family for a couple of days”, the activist said.
On Monday, Members of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) and Campaign against the Return of the Marcoses in Malacañang (Carmma) attempted to go past the barricade of policemen, who were armed with shields and truncheons, in a bid to “gatecrash” the ongoing Sona of Mr. Duterte.

Fortunately, the tension quickly subsided and no one was reported hurt during the incident.
Bayan, Carmma, and other militant groups said the Sona is a big failure because Duterte didn’t live up to his promise.
