Duterte, who made an unannounced stop over at Cebu to attend a special occasion said in a speech that the Catholic Church should start helping people instead of brainwashing them.

Yan ang hamon ko sa kanila”, Duterte addressed several dozen people who erupted in applause.

Investigative articles by Rappler and Philippine Star a year ago suggest that the Archdiocese of Manila alone has more than ₱30 billion dormant investments in different companies, and is the fifth largest investor of the Ayala-owned bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI).

Other archdioceses followed suit with a big investment in different corporations across the Philippines.

Naglolokohan ba tayo,” Duterte said.

The Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) earlier said the group is seeking a dialogue with Duterte but the Malacañang Palace has yet to give an official statement about the matter.

Tingnan natin kung kaya nila,” Duterte said.
