Group Urge Comelec to Publicly Open 27 Ballot Boxes Found in CamSur Copra Warehouse

The Center for Philippine Law (CPLaw) filed a petition to the Supreme Court asking the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to open the 27 ballot boxes found inside a copra warehouse in Buhi town in Camarines Sur. The group is referring to the ballot boxes that were excluded by the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) from the recount.
San Beda Law Professor Matias Esleigue, president of CPLaw said that although the confiscated ballots will not be used in favor of Vice President Robredo anymore, the public has the right to know what’s inside the ballot boxes.
On March 27, 2017, the ballot boxes were found by workers in an abandoned copra warehouse owned by a family close to Congressman Luis Villafuerte – uncle of the late Jessie Robredo, husband of VP Leni Robredo.
“The public need to know what is really inside those ballot boxes. It should be opened in front of the public and should be treated with high importance”, part of the petition said.
Robredo herself and three of Bongbong Marcos legal counselors are members of CPLaw but neither of them gives a comment.
The ballot boxes in question are now stored in Comelec provincial office in Camarines Sur and the group also asked the high court to bring the ballot boxes to Comelec’s headquarters in Quezon City.
The group also offered transport assistance to bring the controversial ballots out of Camarines Sur.
“Since no party takes responsibility for the stolen ballot boxes, the only option is to open it and see the content”, the letter said.
