Four Years after Yolanda, Ex-LP Solon Buys ₱22M Mansion in Alabang

A prominent member of Liberal Party (LP) and former Congressman in Leyte reportedly purchased a 22 million-peso mansion in Ayala-Alabang, the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) said on Friday.

VACC said the former labor leader started his political career as a party-list representative and joined Liberal Party after his party (Waray Waray) lost during the 2010 elections. The former congressman served from 2010 to 2013 under LP banner but lost during re-election.

VACC spokesperson Atty. Arturo Braganza said Francisco Cachuela, a former one-term congressman from Tacloban has no means to buy a P22M property based only on his income as a livestock trader.
The real estate agent who settled the purchase confirmed that Cachuela purchased the house although the property is still not removed from the site where it is listed for sale.

The group believes that the fund used in buying the ex-solon’s new house was part of lost Yolanda funds, as the ex-congressman has no means to buy such an expensive house.

Braganza said the ex-congressman played a big part in receiving and distribution of funds and relief goods during the course of Yolanda typhoon. The lawyer also noted that former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas assigned the ex-congressman to handle most of the relief goods and funds in Southern Leyte.

OXFAM and the World Health Organization recently reported that more than 60% of funds donated to typhoon Haiyan victims were lost and wasted.
