Bishops to Duterte: Respect Human Rights, Leave NPA Alone

The Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), has appealed to President Rodrigo Duterte to let members of the New People’s Army (NPA), to surrender instead of raining them with bombs.

CBCP’s statement came following a military airstrike in Bukidnon on Saturday that killed 13 rebels while taking rest inside their camp.

In a statement issued in Cebu during the plenary assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines on Sunday, Archbishop Socrates Villegas, the outgoing CBCP president, urged the military to always follow the law in dealing with the rebels.

“We pray that the military follow the prescribed steps in implementing the law … steps that should be done in exercising their responsibility as military,” Villegas said.

Villegas condemned the brutal bombing and called it “unnecessary and regretful”.

“We pray that our soldiers would respect the human rights of everyone. We pray that president Duterte would leave the NPA alone and let them surrender if they want to. Bombing  them while sleeping is no other genocide while attempt to reopen the peace talks is still open”, Villegas added.

Members of 57th Infantry Battalion on Friday bombed a suspected rebel camp in Kibawe, Bukidnon, that resulted to the death of at least 13 NPA rebels and the capture of 27 more – most of whom are wounded.

The operation was considered by the military as one of the most successful operation against the NPA operating in Mindanao.
