13 Undocumented Indonesian Nationals Arrested for Joining Edsa Protest

Authorities on Saturday arrested at least thirteen undocumented Indonesian nationals who were spotted joing the protesters during the Edsa rally.

Police Chief Inspector Bartolome Blanco said his office received a tip from concerned individual about the presence of some suspicious foreign nationals who are suspected to be members of ISIS and immediately alerted police members on the ground.

Alhib Khabib, one of the 13 arrested individuals said they only joined the rally in order to collect money for return ticket.

Police later identified the group as Indonesian fishermen who have been in the country for a week after their boat was destroyed off Camarines Sur.

“Someone asked us if we wanted to make some money so we can go home. We were brought here together with hundreds of others from Bicol,” Khabib said.

The foreigner also added that they were given ₱1,000 each and assurance to go back to Indonesia through Zamboanga.

Khabib did not told authorities about the names of the people who hired them but said they will cooperate with the police if the later need more info.

Thousands of people gathered in Edsa on Saturday and the government suspected that most of the protesters were employed by the opposing party, and other people critical to President Rodrigo Duterte.

The group is still being held at Quezon City police while the process to deport them is ongoing. Authorities has already contacted the Indonesian embassy to help the group. No charges have been filed after police did not connection with any terrorist group.
