The current Philippine constitution says churches and religious organizations are exempted from paying taxes.

“SECTION 28. [...] (3) Charitable institutions, churches and parsonages or convents appurtenant thereto, mosques, non-profit cemeteries, and all lands, buildings, and improvements, actually, directly, and exclusively used for religious, charitable, or educational purposes shall be exempt from taxation.”

“Alam nating na marami silanng pera pero hindi ko inakala na ganun sila kayaman. Siguro kailangan na nilang magbayad ng tax”, Duterte said referring to the church leaders.

Religious leaders in the Philippines are enjoying a lifestyle that only wealthy people can enjoy.
Duterte’s own friend Pastor Apollo Quiboloy for instance owns a helicopter and worth hundreds of millions of pesos, so as the controversial Eduardo Manalo of Iglesia Ni Cristo, who believed to be worth billions of pesos in cash and real estates.

Duterte said the news about the selling of the expensive house in an affluent Tagaytay subdivision is a sign that Catholic leaders are doing nothing but making money.

“I will ask the Congress to discuss on this matter”, he said.
