Large Platinum Deposit Discovered Benetah Philippine Rise
A joint research exploration of Japan and South Korea, with the assistance of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has reportedly found massive mineral deposits underneath Benham Rise. The report was released to media on Monday, June 11, 2018.
Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), said the area biggest that Luzon Island houses more than 6 types of minerals in massive volume.
JAMSTEC said that the platinum deposit alone is estimated to be more than 2,000 metric tons, bigger than Russia’s reserve of 1,100 metric tons.
The discovery came after the Philippine government allowed Japan and Korea to explore the area fearing that China might continue its secret exploration.
In 2014, JAMSTEC uncovered polymetallic minerals, hydrothermal deposits, rare earth elements and valuable manganese nodules in the deep sea between Japan and the Philippines.
Aside from platinum, the agency said signs of palladium, manganese, gold, nickel, silver, and cobalt are also present in both deep and shallow water.
In an interview with The STAR at the 1st Philippine Deep Sea Resources Summit the DOST organized this week at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ortigas Center, Quezon City, Carlos Primo David of DOST said “combining a (resource) exploration with scientific research might enable the Philippine government get these natural resources to help boost the country’s economy.
Both the Philippines and Japan agreed to send military to patrol the area starting middle of 2016.
