New K-12 Textbooks to Include Infra Built During Marcos Era, DepEd Says

The Department of Education (DepEd), on Friday, announced that it would include most of the major government infrastructure projects built during the time of former President Ferdinand Marcos, in the new textbooks for K12 curriculum.

DepEd Superintendent Marisa Villasor told Radyo Agong that the change is not to favor the late president but the need for children to know the true history, and added that the Marcos infrastructure projects is a big part of the Philippine history.

The DepEd official also noted that the inclusion of the crimes committed under the Martial Law is still under deliberation among top department executives. She added, however, that it may not be included because the board of directors including the National Book Development Board (NBDV), are against teaching the violent-related topic to children, especially that the said violence was rooted from rebellion and leftist protests. There is also no proven legal basis that said Marcos had personally committed the crimes.

She said that the children should be taught what really happened with evidence and not just because somebody got hurt, we give conclusions.

The official also added that the current textbooks published under the previous administration of ex-President Benigno Aquino III have more than 1,300 errors that needed to be corrected.

They did not know anything more than that. We do not favor nor condemn the former president. Teaching the students what he has done to this country either good or bad is not favoring him or his family. About his alleged crimes, leave it to the court.

Textbooks that include Marcos’ records will be available and distributed starting September 2018.
