NHC Commissioner Says Aquino’s Name on Airport Causes Bad Luck

One of the commissioners of the National Historical Commission (NHC) told lawmakers on Friday that the name of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. should be removed from the name of the airport because it causes bad luck.
“Not only one but two people who know astrology told me that it’s time to change the name of NAIA because the name associated with it has been causing bad luck”, Atty. Noel Agravante told the House Transportation Committee on Friday.
Agravante, a former UP-LB History Professor and political activist said he had been pushing the change of the name of NAIA since 1990’s because he believed it’s not an appropriate name.
“We name government establishments to people who made effort to create or build it and not to people who died in there without meaning”, he added.
Alternatively, at least 2 senators on Sunday called for an upgrade of air transportation facilities across the country after a runway closure at the main airport led to the disruption of hundreds of flights. The upgrade would include the possibility of renaming the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) with a more suitable name.
The runway mess is "a signal for a new airport to be built," said Senator JV Ejercito.
Senator Win Gatchalian, meanwhile, said the government needs to build better airports and more runways to keep up with the steadily rising air traffic. He added that a possibility of permanently closing the NAIA should be considered.
“You can move the airport to a different location with a different name”, he added.
